What's New in the World of CGMs

Medtronics has a new CGM and Eversense 365 gets clearance as a 1-year implantable CGM.

Welcome to The Diabetech Roundup where every week I’ll update you on the latest in diabetes tech, news and innovations. This week I’m going all-in on continuous glucose monitors — from my experience wearing Medtronic’s new CGM, to the Eversense 365 one-year implantable CGM.

Plus, this week we are celebrating National Diabetes Awareness Month with a GIVEAWAY! We’re giving away one-year subscriptions to Sweet Dreams — an iPhone App that displays live CGM readings on the phone Lock Screen and Apple Watch face. Read ‘til the end to learn more!

I wore Medtronic's new Simplera CGM

Medtronic’s new CGM promises a “Simple Era.” The sleek new disposable CGM is a simplified alternative to its clunkier Guardian 4 sensor. It offers a square, flush design, similar in size to the Dexcom. Approved for seven-day use, it integrates with Medtronic’s Smart insulin pen, InPen, for personalized dosing recommendations and provides glucose readings through a smartphone app. I found Simplera’s adhesive and user-experience to be on par with other CGMs, but there were some drawbacks – including its short wear time of seven days.

Simplera CGM works for seven days and the adhesive stays on much longer.

The Simplera CGM works for seven days and has a two hour warm-up.

My latest article breaks down Simplera’s pros and cons, including how it holds up against competitors and a closer look at accuracy. You can read more about my experience wearing it, when it will become available, and watch my first impressions videos here.

New Research: CGMs decrease hospitalizations for people with type 2 diabetes

A study presented at the EASD Conference highlighted the positive impact CGMs have for people with type 2 diabetes. According to the study, wearing a CGM not only improves glycemic control, but it also reduces hospitalizations for people with type 2 diabetes. This research could incentivize health insurance companies to cover CGMs for more people considering hospitalizations for people with type 2 cost nearly five times more than people without it. Read more about the study and see all the charts in my latest article.

The 1-year Eversense implantable CGM is here!

The FDA has officially cleared Senseonics’ Eversense 365 CGM system, the world’s first CGM with a one-year sensor lifespan. The sensor is implanted through a minor procedure and only requires a weekly calibration as opposed to it’s predecessor, which required a calibration once a day. A minor, but exciting upgrade is the transmitter’s charger which has moved from proprietary to a universal USB-C charging port!

The Eversense 365 features an implantable sensor, an external transmitter, and a smartphone app, providing convenient access to glucose readings.

The sensor has integrated CGM (iCGM) designation, meaning it could one day connect to insulin pumps to automate insulin delivery. That said, no pump manufacturers have announced plans for compatibility. Eversense has about 6,000 users and will need a compatible AID pump in order to catch up to Dexcom and Abbott’s millions of users.

I'm set to interview the CEO of Senseonics and Ascensia’s President of CGM about the future of the Eversense CGM — send in your questions for our upcoming podcast by joining Patreon! In the meantime, check out my interview with Eversense user Paul Reid below.
